Drawing and Painting

Upper School Drawing and Painting courses begin with foundation courses that introduce basic methods of creating two dimensional art. Students are instructed in specific techniques and approaches to art making that allow them to explore a wide variety of materials including: charcoal, pencil, oil and acrylic paint and printmaking. Emphasis is placed on working from observation and representing form through light and shadow.

The Drawing and Painting Portfolio course is an intensive course designed to challenge students to new levels of art making. Through a series of standard college foundation year assignments, students begin to build a portfolio of work, as well as a sense of individual interest and style. At the end of the spring semester 8-10 pieces are photographed in slide format. The slides can be submitted with college applications and used as a foundation portfolio if the student pursues the AP Portfolio class.

The Advanced Placement Drawing and Painting Portfolio course is offered to twelfth graders. In this college-level intensive course, students work to create a “concentration portfolio,”a collection of twelve pieces describing an in-depth exploration of a particular theme or concept.
