Ceramics

Upper School Ceramics and Sculpture courses begin with foundation courses that introduce basic skills. In Ceramics students learn to construct with clay slabs, coils and extrusions, as well as mastering the technique of centering and throwing a vessel. In foundation Sculpture students use the four primary technical methods for creating three-dimensional art: subtraction, manipulation, addition and casting. Students will explore a variety of materials including clay, plaster, wire, cardboard, wood and other non-traditional materials.

Ceramics and Sculpture Portfolio classes are intensive courses offered to eleventh and twelfth graders. Students in these courses create a body of ceramic and/or sculptural work, incorporating their own developed sense of style in combination with ongoing assignments. Slide lectures, museum visits and class critiques will help students to place their work in historical context.
