Mathematics

Mathematics challenges students to think about relationships and to look for patterns to solve problems. The mathematics program is approached with a spiral learning method; teaching is seen as a continual process of diagnosis and instruction. In addition to the teaching of concepts and skills, emphasis is placed on developing problem-solving abilities and creating an awareness of the applications of mathematics in everyday life. Students are encouraged to seek a variety of strategies in approaching the solution of problems.

In the Lower School concrete materials, manipulative, and class projects enhance the children’s understanding of mathematical concepts and their mastery of the four basic operations. In the Middle School, students proceed through the study of arithmetic, pre-algebra, and algebra topics at a rate appropriate to their readiness. Advanced students can complete two years of high school algebra by the end of eighth grade.

In the Upper School, students continue to develop problem-solving skills as they go on to study more advanced and abstract topics. Flexibility in the program enables capable students to proceed through the curriculum at an accelerated rate. Those who are prepared for advanced study take Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Advanced Placement Calculus in their junior and senior years.

Independent study is available for selected students with special curricular needs. Throughout the curriculum, various instructional materials, including calculators and computers, are used in addition to basic texts.

Each year Berkeley Carroll’s Upper School Math Department offers a five-week Summer Advancement class. This special opportunity, which is contingent on student demand and faculty availability, is intended for highly qualified and motivated students to advance to our accelerated program. Typically a small group of students takes an intense, seminar-style Algebra II / Trigonometry course in the summer following their sophomore year. They then take Pre Calculus in their junior year and are qualified to study Calculus as seniors. Depending on interest, this program may be extended to include a summer Geometry class following freshman year. Our Summer Advancement classes are taught by Berkeley Carroll faculty and follow the school’s syllabi. If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity for your child, conatct Shally Adasko, Upper School Math Chair, at sadasko@berkeleycarroll.org.
