The Berkeley Carroll School

Lower School Admissions

brooklyn private preschools

The Lower School welcomes inquiries from all families who are interested in learning more about admittance to the school, from our private Preschool through Grade 4. At the core of The Berkeley Carroll School are students who have a passion for learning and are creatively and intellectually curious. Admission is based on parent conversations, children’s visits, and a child’s academic and social potential.

The admissions process for the 2017-18 school year began Thursday, September 1, 2016. Our online admissions forms and events module are hosted by a company named Ravenna. You can register for an Open House and apply to BC by clicking the Apply Now button, creating an account, adding your child’s information, and choosing Berkeley Carroll as a school you’re exploring for the upcoming year. If you already have a Ravenna account, you may use the same login and password. Please note that as part of our process, at least one parent or guardian of Lower School applicants is required to attend an Open House. If you toured last year, you won’t be required to attend this year, though of course you’re always welcome to visit us again.

Please click on the grade level your child will be applying for, to get specific information on application procedures for the 2017-18 school year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us in the Admissions Office.

We are excited to meet you!

As an inclusive community, Berkeley Carroll honors the dignity of all people. In our culture and our program, we embrace and respect differences. These include age, ethnicity, family structure, gender, learning style, physical ability, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic class.

We believe in teaching and learning about these issues, even when the conversations are difficult. Our commitment to diversity is one expression of the mission of our school. We want to help students understand the complexity of a constantly changing world. The confidence and ability to engage respectfully with others is a signature of a Berkeley Carroll education.

Steps For Applying to Lower School

Pre-K 3 (Preschool)

3 years of age by September 1, 2017

You will be able to access the Berkeley Carroll application and to schedule an Open House beginning on September 1.

As you may know, our Pre-K 3 program is a very small one, mainly filled with siblings of currently enrolled students, legacies, and children of faculty (Admission for siblings, legacies, and faculty children is not automatic, but they are given preference and early notification). Spaces for other applicants are usually very limited, as we have only one class, which is usually comprised of about 16 pupils. We do not charge a fee to submit an application for Preschool.

THE STEPS FOR APPLYING FOR PRE-K 3 ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  • At least one parent or guardian of an applicant must attend an Open House. If you attended an Open House last Spring you are not required to come again, though you are welcome to do so.
  • A parent/guardian must fill out an online application. The core application is due by December 1. Applications that have been thoughtfully completed help us to get the most accurate picture of a child and family and we encourage you to take some time to answer the questions on the Parent Statement section of the application.
  • If your child is in a school or daycare program, please have his or her teacher fill out a teacher evaluation form and return it directly to us by January 6. (The form will be found in the Supplemental Forms section of the application.)
  • Once we have a clear idea of siblings, legacies, and faculty children who will be attending in the coming year, we may find that we have available spaces. If so, we will look to balance the class and may contact a family to set up a Parent Interview and Applicant Playgroup. At that time, families will be charged a Registration fee for their child’s Playgroup appointment that is equivalent to the application fee of $100.

Please note : We offer a choice of 3 schedules for Pre-K 3:
Full Day, Half Day, and Flexi-3 (Full Days M, W, F; Half Days T, Th). Families may add on to their child’s schedule at 3 set times during the year (October 15, January 15, and April 15), after consulting with his or her teachers, for an additional pro-rated charge.

Pre-K 4

4 years of age by September 1, 2017

You will be able to access the Berkeley Carroll application and to schedule an Open House beginning on September 1.

Pre-K 4 is our largest point of entry in the Lower School. We add two classes to the grade, making a total of three going forward, and the class size grows a bit. We typically have somewhere between 30 and 34 spaces, though some of those spaces are taken up by sibling and legacy candidates, whose numbers vary from year to year. We do offer preference and early notification for sibling and legacy candidates in Preschool through Kindergarten, though they go through the same process and their admission is not automatic.

THE STEPS FOR APPLYING FOR PRE-K 4 ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  • At least one parent or guardian of an applicant must attend an Open House. If you attended an Open House last year you are not required to come again, though you are welcome to do so.
  • A parent/guardian must fill out an online application. The core application is due by December 1, though we would prefer to receive it earlier. Applications that have been thoughtfully completed help us to get the most accurate picture of a child and family and we encourage you to take some time to answer the questions on the Parent Statement section of the core application.
  • If your child is in a school or daycare program, please have his or her teacher fill out a teacher evaluation form and return it directly to us by January 6. (The form can be found in the Supplemental Forms section of the application.)
  • After submitting the core application, parents/guardians will be able to schedule a Parent Interview and an Applicant Playgroup, our version of the interview for children entering Pre-K 4. Please note that we would prefer that the Parent Interview take place after at least one parent/guardian has attended an Open House.
  • Berkeley Carroll offers financial aid for students in Pre-K 4 through grade 12. Families apply for aid at the same time they apply for admission. For information on that process, please visit the Financial Aid page of our website, under the Admissions tab.

Please note: We offer a choice of two (2) schedules for Pre-K 4:
Full Day and Flexi-3, which is comprised of Full Days M, W, F; Half Days T, Th. Families may add on to their child’s schedule at 3 set times during the year (October 15, January 15, and April 15), after consulting with his or her teachers, for an additional pro-rated charge.

Kindergarten

Must 5 years of age by September 1, 2017

You will be able to access the Berkeley Carroll application and to schedule an Open House beginning on September 1.

We typically have between 12 and 15 spaces available for new Kindergarten students each year, though some of those spaces are taken up by sibling and legacy candidates, whose numbers vary. We do offer preference and early notification for sibling and legacy candidates in Preschool through Kindergarten, though they go through the same process and their admission is not automatic.

THE STEPS FOR APPLYING FOR KINDERGARTEN ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  • At least one parent or guardian of an applicant must attend an Open House. If you attended an Open House last year you are not required to come again, though you are welcome to do so.
  • A parent/guardian must fill out an online application. The core application is due by November 15, though we would prefer to receive it earlier. Applications that have been thoughtfully completed help us to get the most accurate picture of a child and family and we encourage you to take some time to answer the questions on the Parent Statement section of the core application.
  • After submitting the core application, parents/guardians will be able to schedule a Parent Interview and an Applicant Playgroup, our version of the interview for children entering Kindergarten. Please note that we would prefer that the Parent Interview take place after at least one parent/guardian has attended an Open House.
  • Please have your child’s current teacher fill out a teacher evaluation form and return it directly to us by January 6. (The form will be found in the Supplemental Forms section of the application.)
  • Berkeley Carroll offers financial aid for students in Pre-K 4 through grade 12. Families apply for aid at the same time they apply for admission. For information on that process, please visit the Financial Aid page of our website, under the Admissions tab.
  • Berkeley Carroll does not require, nor will it accept, the Early Childhood Admissions Assessment (ECAA) for Kindergarten applicants.

*In a continued effort to support our Kindergarten applicants as they demonstrate their individual strengths, several ISAAGNY schools will be administering a new assessment protocol, the School Readiness Task (SRT) developed by researchers at Reflection Sciences, LLC. The SRT is a brief (5-min) iPad-based assessment and may be administered by participating schools to applicants during their play-group visit. The SRT assesses general thinking skills rather than knowledge, so there is no need for advance preparation. Reflection Sciences will retain the results of the SRT and will share these results with the other participating ISAAGNY schools to which your child is applying (confidentially), such that each applicant will take the SRT only once during the application process. Given that this is only one aspect of a comprehensive admissions process, applicants’ results will not be shared with parents. Reflection Sciences may retain and use de-identified (names permanently deleted) SRT scores in subsequent research, in a manner consistent with all Federal and State regulations concerning data privacy. Additional information pertaining to the SRT can be found on the ISAAGNY website.
