Physical Education

The philosophy of the Middle School Physical Education Program is directly related to the School's mission and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  The program fosters the same values of inclusion, integrity, respect, responsibility, and participation that are embodied in the classroom.

Our goal to instill in each student a love of physical activity.  By exposing students to a variety of skills and activities, we hope to develop lifelong lovers of physical activity, sport, and recreation. The lessons learned from participation in physical education are invaluable and help in the development of self-esteem and self-confidence.  We aspire for all students to be physically literate. Students are more likely to engage in lifelong physical activity when they feel competent and confident in their fundamental movement skills.

Using inclusive methods and language, we offer activities for all ability levels, while also modifying activities to accommodate all students' abilities and experience levels. Students have the opportunity to take risks and try something new in a safe, positive environment while learning important life skills and developing physical fitness. They develop socially while learning lessons of inclusivity, character, respect, sportsmanship, and teamwork. While competition can be part of physical education, cooperation, effort, and cognitive and physical development are emphasized in addition to understanding how to win and lose.

Another goal is to provide a safe and inviting classroom where all students can experience growth in their skill development. Engagement and enjoyment need to be fostered and experienced by each student. Students are equipped with the basic skills to be able to confidently:

  • move and increase their heart rate
  • work cooperatively and collaboratively
  • think critically and creatively
  • use offensive and defensive strategies
  • try new challenges
  • persevere when frustrated and be resourceful
  • act with integrity
  • listen and follow directions
  • learn how to be contributing members of a team
  • throw, catch, dribble, strike, dance, and much more!
