History
In 1982 the 96-year-old Berkeley Institute and the young Carroll Street School merged to create a preschool through 12 th grade college preparatory program with 480 students. There were 15 students in the first graduating class on June 13, 1983. Today Berkeley Carroll enrolls more than 800 students, plus an additional 60 in its Child Care Center; the Class of 2005, with 61 students, was the largest graduating class in the school’s history.
As it celebrates its 120 th anniversary, Berkeley Carroll continues to be a dynamic community sustained by a passion for learning and supported by an enviable teacher-to-student ratio of 1 to 7. The richness of the institution stems in part from its commitment to diversity: 25% of the student body are students of color. Berkeley Carroll is fortunate to be located in vibrant Park Slope, a neighborhood that boasts a music conservatory, zoo, one of the largest public library systems in the country, and a world-class art museum. The vitality of the surrounding neighborhood is reflected in the students and faculty of the Berkeley Carroll School.
