Shawn V. Austin joined the Board of Trustees in 2012. He serves on the Finance Committee. Shawn is the SVP of distribution for Liberty Mutual Benefits, a division of Liberty Mutual Insurance Group. The father of a Berkeley Carroll alum, Shawn is a graduate of Fordham University, where he earned a master’s degree in business administration, and of Rutgers University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He holds board positions with several not-for-profit organizations. Shawn is married to Jennifer Jones Austin. They have two children.
Amy Bender joined the Board of Trustees in 2009. Currently Vice President, she has been actively involved at the school as a grade representative, parent ambassador and auction chair. She is on the Board of Directors at the Prospect Park Alliance and has served on the boards of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, City Parks Foundation and New York Public Library, as the NYC Council representative. Amy was previously chief of staff to NYC Council's Finance Committee and director of the Council’s Capital Budget Division. She has a B.A. from Kenyon College and an M.P.A. from NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service. Amy and her husband Bruce Bender are parents to a BC student and a BC alum.
Ann-Marie Cascarino joined the Board of Trustees in 2015. Prior to joining the Board, she served a three-year term as co-chair for The Benefit for Berkeley Carroll and also served as a class parent. Ann-Marie brings her extensive experience in business development and sales management, most recently for Microsoft and The Wall Street Journal, to bear in her capacity serving on the Development Committee as well as the Alumni Task Force. She received an M.A. in international politics with a French minor from the University of Maine. Ann-Marie lives in Park Slope with her husband, Rob, son, Griffin '18 and daughter, Kira '20.
Mark CheffoMark has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2011. He is co-chair of Quinn Emanuel's Global Product Liability and Mass Torts Practice, where he represents defendants in pr1oducts liability, insurance and mass torts litigations, serving as national coordinating and trial counsel both in large, complex matters and in individual cases. Mark, who is also very involved in pro bono efforts, is active in local bar associations and is a frequent lecturer on products liability issues. Mike and his wife, Beverly, are the parents of two Berkeley Carroll students.
Anthony J. Cornicello
Anthony J. Cornicello joined the Board of Trustees in 2015 and serves on the Buildings and Grounds Committee. Tony has been a Berkeley Carroll parent since 2004. He is a partner at Cornicello, Tendler & Baumel-Cornicello, LLP where he practices commercial real estate, primarily representing property owners. In addition, Tony and his office have provided legal services to several not-for-profits including and The Italian American Museum, Safe Horizons, The Intrepid Museum, Visiting Nurse Services and New Destiny Housing Corporation. Tony is a graduate of Fordham University and St. Johns University School of Law, he is married to his business partner, Susan Baumel-Cornicello and they have two children, Emily and Daniel, who attend the school.
Lydia is a longtime Berkeley Carroll parent and first became a trustee in 2006. A journalist specializing in science and social issues, she is the author of two books and numerous articles for such publications as Scientific American, The Wall Street Journal, Psychology Today, Vogue and others. She is a former president of the Park Slope Civic Council, a neighborhood civic association, and a former trustee of the Oliver Scholars, a nonprofit educational access program. Lydia now serves as chair of the Board.
Andrew has been a Berkeley Carroll parent since 2011. He is a partner in the New York office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and co-chair of Gibson Dunn’s Capital Markets Practice Group. Andrew earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School and his B.A. from the University of Michigan. He serves on the Finance Committee and the Development Committee.
Virginia Freire is a BC alumna and lifer. She owns a boutique portrait studio in Brooklyn that specializes in capturing magical moments in artful portraiture of children and families. She received a B.S. in human development and family studies from Cornell University and has worked in the fields of social work, international education and fundraising. Virginia has lived abroad in Zimbabwe, Australia and Ecuador and currently lives with her family in her native Prospect Heights. She serves on the Communications & Admissions Committee and the Committee on Trustees.
Denise Brereton Gamble
Denise Brereton Gamble joined the Board of Trustees in 2016.
A public relations expert, she currently serves as a Senior Agency Analyst for
New York City’s 311 Call Center. Denise has devoted most of her career to public service. A devoted patron of the arts, she is a
member of the Parents Steering Committee at The Ailey School, Alvin Ailey
American Dance Theater. Denise has
also been a mentor in Roman Catholic youth development programs. She and her
husband Paul, an attorney and recently retired Captain, US Navy Judge Advocate
General’s Corps, have a son in the Upper School.
Richard is a proud parent of two girls who have attended Berkeley Carroll since 2010. He is a principal in a real estate development company that builds supportive and affordable housing in the New York region. Richard previously worked at Forest City Ratner as an Executive Project Manager on various residential and commercial buildings. Richard has a B.A. from Rutgers College and currently serves on the Buildings & Grounds committee and the Finance Committee.
Katya has been a Berkeley Carroll parent since 2009. She is a partner in the New York office of Jenner & Block LLP, where she specializes in white collar criminal defense and investigations. She also serves on the firm’s Policy Committee, and is co-chair of the firm’s Audit and Hiring Committees. Prior to joining Jenner, Katya was a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of New York specializing in organized crime and racketeering cases; while an AUSA, Katya prosecuted the leadership of three of the five organized crime families of La Cosa Nostra. Katya earned her J.D. from Georgetown Law School, and her B.A. from the University of Texas. Katya is a Parent Ambassador and serves on the Capital Campaign Steering Committee.
Larry has been a Berkeley Carroll parent since 2013, with a son about to enter eighth grade. After graduating from George Washington University Law School, Larry practiced law in New York for only a couple of years before becoming a writer for television and movies in Los Angeles. He returned to New York City in the 1990s, where he continued to write, but also began a second career in philanthropy. In addition to Berkeley Carroll, Larry is on the boards of two theater companies in New York and a Jewish organization in Amherst, Mass.
Sarada has been a Berkeley Carroll parent since 2013. She is a practicing medical oncologist and hematologist who also focuses on teaching. She received her initial medical degree in India after graduating from The Bronx High School of Science and then underwent residency and fellowship training at New York Methodist Hospital. After going into private practice and teaching in the U.S., Sarada relocated with her family to India, where she set up an oncology practice and clinic that served as an international model for treating patients of all socioeconomic strata. Sarada has been active in the Parents Association and serves on the Communications & Admissions Committee.
Susan has been a Berkeley Carroll parent since 2008. She is the co-founder of New Narratives, a West Africa-focused media development organization, which empowers its women journalists to write in-depth, informative stories on core societal issues. She has previously worked at Jazz at Lincoln Center and Time Inc. in business affairs and project management. Susan has an M.B.A. from New York University's Stern School of Business and a master's in library and information science from Pratt Institute. She serves on the Development Committee and the Committee on Trustees.
Mike is the father of two Berkeley Carroll graduates, Phoebe '11 and Ian '14. He is a partner at the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, LLP, where he manages the New York office and specializes in complex commercial litigation, white collar criminal defense and professional liability defense. Mike previously served as an assistant district attorney in the Frauds Bureau of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. He is a graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center and received his undergraduate degree from Boston College. Mike has been a member of the Board since 2011, and currently serves as the Chair of the Committee on Trustees.
Prashant has been a parent at Berkeley Carroll since 2012, and joined the Board in 2016. He is a Senior Managing Director at Macquarie Bank. Prashant received a Masters of Business Administration from the Stern School of Business at New York University, where he was conferred the Stern Scholar Award. He has a Masters in Science in Oceanography from University of New Hampshire/Dartmouth College. Previously, he received a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He holds a patent for a wave-powered sea-water pump for use in aquaculture farms and co-founded Krishi Power Pvt Ltd, a small-scale renewable energy generation company in India. Prashant lives in Park Slope with his wife and two children. He enjoys skiing and hiking with his kids. He serves on the Finance Committee.
Joe Polizzotto has been a trustee since 2011. Along with his wife Janet, Joe is the proud parent of Berkeley Carroll alum Julie Polizzotto '10, who is a BC lifer. Joe spent 25 years in senior capacities at two major banks, serving as the general counsel of Lehman Brothers and the general counsel of the Americas of Deutsche Bank. He is currently a Senior Vice President, Strategy & Client Services for QuisLex. Joe is a graduate of Columbia College and New York University School of Law, and chairs the Development Committee at BC.
Jay has been a Berkeley Carroll parent since 2009. He is a portfolio manager at BAM investment funds, where he focuses on investments in the healthcare industry. He has previously worked as a management consultant at McKinsey, and has also held clinical and faculty positions at Harvard Medical School, and NYU. Jay has an MD and JD from Duke University, and completed his training in Internal Medicine at Harvard. He serves on the Finance Committee and Development Committee.
Stacey Reiss joined the Board of Trustees in 2013 and currently serves on the Committee on Trustees and the Communications & Admissions Committee. She is the co-chair of the Berkeley Carroll Film Series which screens the work of members of the BC community. Stacey is an Emmy award-winning producer whose credits include "The Diplomat," "It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise" and "I Knew It Was You"; all aired on HBO. She holds a journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and is the mother of two boys who attend Berkeley Carroll (Leo '22 and Elias '25).
Chad has been a Berkeley Carroll parent since 2012. He is the founder of Tapgram, an assistive messaging platform for people who have difficulty with keyboards. He previously worked at NBC News in London and New York as well as Reuters Television, before moving into field of branded entertainment where he developed, produced and directed web shows. He has a B.A. from Brown University and is a recent graduate the Flatiron School. He loves coding, 3D printing and tinkering with his kids. He serves on the Communications & Admissions Committee as well as on the Additional Revenue task force.
A graduate of The Fashion Institute of Technology, Christina worked as a designer on Seventh Avenue for 15 years. In 1996, she and her husband David, a screenwriter and commercial director, moved to LA where she worked in the independent film and TV industries. Christina also became a mentor with DreamYard LA, an organization dedicated to bringing the arts to at-risk youth. Returning to NYC in 2001, Christina became design director at Imagemark, a marketing firm. They have two children, Jackson '16 and Chloe '18. Christina served as co-chair of the BC’s Annual Gala Auction in 2007 and 2008 and joined the Board of Trustees in 2008. She currently serves on the Buildings & Grounds Committee and as chair of the Communications & Admissions Committee.
George joined the Board of Trustees in 2012. He serves as chair of the Buildings & Grounds Committee and is also a member of the Finance Committee. He earned his B.A. and Ph.D. in economic history from Columbia University. George is deputy director of the New York City Independent Budget Office, where he oversees the nonpartisan agency’s fiscal policy research and budget analysis. He has authored numerous reports on fiscal policy and education finance, and has also taught public finance and policy analysis at the New School and NYU’s Wagner School. George and his wife Karen Schlain have lived in Park Slope for nearly 30 years and are the parents of two former Berkeley Carroll students.
Michael has been a parent at Berkeley Carroll since 2008. Michael holds B.A. degrees in economics and political science, magna cum laude, from Kenyon College and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He also holds an M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Michael sits on the Finance and Development committees and is the chair of the Investments Sub-committee which is charged with overseeing the investment of the school's endowment.
Chris Welch joined the Board of Trustees in 2010; he is a member of the Finance Committee, Investment Committee and Campaign Steering Committee. Chris is a principal and senior portfolio manager at Welch Capital Partners, LLC, an investment management company focusing on public securities. Previously, Chris was a portfolio manager for Bankers Trust in both New York and Hong Kong. Chris holds both an A.B. in economics and M.B.A. from Harvard University. Chris is married to Kate Hosford and they have two sons at Berkeley Carroll.
